What is cosmetic dentistry?
Cosmetic dentistry encompasses a wide range of treatment to provide the desired result of an esthetic, confident smile. It is incumbent upon the practitioner to provide this result with the minimum of "unnecessary treatment " and the minimum of tooth "violation ". The dentist will often offer several treatment options to provide the desired result, ranging from "good enough " to optimal treatment, from less expensive to "state of the art " costly therapies. The various options include bleaching teeth, removing excessive gum tissue( "gummy "smile), veneers(thin shells of porcelain bonded over the tooth), porcelain, glass and ceramic crowns or bridges, implants, removable appliances and orthodontia(braces).
In our office I have had patients come in with the expectation of numerous costly veneers and have had them forgo that treatment for the offered less involved and far less expensive option of bleaching their teeth. The natural and non-invasive result was sufficient to provide the sought after confident and appealing smile. Conversely, I have had patients come in inquiring after "whitening " only to have to inform them that their dentition must be treated in a disease reduction manner prior to addressing their cosmetic concerns. Cosmetic dentistry can be the next phase of treatment only after any disease state is addressed and successfully treated. Furthermore the work rendered must be maintained; on a daily basis by the patient and routinely by the provider to ensure the longevity of the therapy.
The benefits of a cosmetically enhanced dentition can be life altering. The recipient can experience a boost in self confidence and /or realize a life long desire for that which nature did not provide. As always, you only have once to make a first impression. A smile is an important part of that initial engagement. Make certain that impact is positive, appealing and inviting.
