An Interview With Dr. Winter, A Qualified Dentist In Madison

What is cosmetic dentistry?

Cosmetic dentistry is a focus of dentistry that pertains to beauty. It is not a recognized specialty by the ADA American Dental Association. Many dentists consider themselves cosmetic dentists but truly cosmetically oriented practices have sought out post graduate training and have worked diligently to provide the ultimate in esthetics, function and beauty to their patients. Who is a good candidate for cosmetic dentistry?

Cosmetic dentistry is available at any age but truly specialized procedures such as porcelain veneers and crowns are only done on adults that have completed their skeletal growth. This is usually around the age of 18-21 for men and women respectively.

How important is your smile?

It is said the the eyes are the gateway to the soul but I feel it is your smile. People that have beautiful smiles often have healthy self-esteems and are able to express themselves confidently. People that have poor smiles are often very self-conscious about their looks and it becomes a detriment to their personal, social and psychological well-being. Is cosmetic dentistry worth the time and the cost?

That is very subjective. There is the cost of the dentistry and the cost of replacement as it wears or breaks down. This must be compared to one s needs, wants and desires. Often times cosmetic dentistry is likened to cosmetic surgery. If it improves one s life it may very well be worth the cost several times over!

How long will my new smile last?

The type of material will determine the longevity. Composite bonding can be expected to last 5-7 years perhaps less if someone is a clencher or grinder at night. Porcelain restorations can last 7-15 years and again depend on the forces and habits the patient has such as grinding ones teeth at night. If night guards are made, they can decrease wear on the restorations and allow them to last longer. The most important factor is if someone keeps up with regular recall visits at their dentist. The ability to check someone s bite, gums and the margins of the restoration will allow the dentist to maintain them for as long as possible.
