Why would someone need or be interested in cosmetic dentistry?
Cosmetic dentistry is a broadly used term, but this can mean anything that improves the appearance of some aspect of an individual's teeth or smile. So, while we often tend to associate cosmetic dentistry with dramatic make-overs as popularized on television and in the print media, cosmetic dentistry can be something as simple as replacing a dark filling with a tooth-colored one. Really, then, the main reason that someone would need or want cosmetic dentistry usually has to do with any area that catches their attention in a negative way. For some people, the problem may be that their teeth are crooked. Others may feel they are too dark. Still other patients make mention of the fact that every time they see themselves in a photo, they notice a dark area when they smile. This can be caused by a wide variety of circumstances -- apart from the obvious missing tooth. There are solutions to almost every cosmetic problem. Of course, the complexity of the solution typically depends upon the complexity of the problem. Often, though, there is more than one way to resolve what a patient is trying to correct.
How can cosmetic dentistry change my life?
One of the most rewarding aspects of my profession follows from the changes I see in people after they improve their smiles through cosmetic dentistry. In my Port Richmond Philadelphia dental practice, I have seen and treated a broad range of cosmetic dental problems. But the moments that stand out the most are when patients come back to tell me how much of a difference it has made for them to no longer be self-conscious about their appearance. I can recall one young man who had a mouth full of dark mercury fillings and discolored resins. He was always shielding his mouth when he spoke. We fixed his teeth before his wedding. I don't think I'll ever forget the acknowledgment he gave me for what this did for his self esteem. Likewise, I remember another young girl who was actually quite pretty, except for her teeth. It held her back both romantically AND professionally. In her case, it was mostly dental fear that led to her poor condition. We were able to help her get through that, however, and now she smiles at every opportunity!
