What is cosmetic dentistry?
Cosmetic dentistry is not a recognized speciality in dentistry, but rather describes the process by which a dentist restores teeth so that they have a more appealing appearance. This is often done using such tools as bleaching, braces, white filling materials, veneers or crowns. Anyone can claim to be a cosmetic dentist. However, like most things, skill levels vary greatly from one dentist to another.
How long will my new smile last?
The durability of your new smile is dependent on three things:
1. How well the dentist does his job in shaping teeth, taking impressions and so forth
2. How well the lab does their job and the quality of the materials used
3. How well you take care of the work after it is placed, meaning good oral hygiene and avoiding harmful behaviors
Who is a good candidate for cosmetic dentistry?
A person is a good candidate for cosmetic dentistry when they have the following:
1. A good foundation beneath their teeth, meaning healthy bones and gums
2. A person who understands the benefits and limitations of the procedures
3. A person who is willing to work to maintain the dental work. This means proper oral hygiene and not abusing the restorations with habits like tooth grinding, nail biting etc.
4. Someone who desires to have more beautiful teeth and is willing to go through the necessary treatment.
Is cosmetic dentistry worth the time and the cost?
Cosmetic dentistry can make a tremendous difference in the appearance of a person's smile. One should understand that there are limitations as to what can be done and that bar habits that destroy teeth will also destroy dental restorations.
How important is your smile?
A person's smile has value that is hard to measure. The beauty of a person's smile may greatly influence a person's sense of worth. An attractive smile may improve job prospects and social opportunities. Society would have us believe that the appearance of one's smile is essential to true beauty but I have known many beautiful people with few or no teeth. Their beauty radiates from within. I have also known people with beautiful teeth whose smile doesn't radiate to me. When a person has a good heart it will show in their face. On such a person beautiful teeth will compliment what is already there.
